ABSTRACT
Background
Chronic rhinosinusitis is characterized by mucosal inflammation in the nose and sinuses that lasts more
than 3 months. Treatment involves most commonly pharmacologic therapy, with surgery generally reserved
for those patients whose symptoms persist after appropriate medical therapy. Numerous recent studies
show that there is a correlation between vitamin D deficiency and inflammatory processes, specially in
chronic rhinosinusitis, which expresses it has critical role in it’s pathophysiology. However, in the current
literature, there is lack of therapeutic role of vitamin D supplementation studies in chronic rhinosinusitis
treatment.
Objective
To evaluate the result of using vitamin D supplementation additionally in pharmacologic therapy of chronic
rhinosinusitis.
Methods and materials
In total 150 patients, who are diagnosed with chronic rhinosinusitis at the university hospital between
2018.10.01-2019.04.01, will be enrolled in our randomized clinical trial study. All subjects will be
randomized equally to either vitamin D (1000 IU cholecalciferol daily for 28 days) or control groups. The
Experimental group subjects will be studied as with or without nasal polyp subgroups. Treatment results will
be determined by any changes in clinical symptoms, physical and nasal endoscopy examination and the
findings will be evaluated in 2 stages.
