hepatitis B and C is still over existed. Primary prevention of HCC is currently hard to achieve

because of a limited availability of antiviral therapy. A significant proportion of HCC patients in

Mongolia is diagnosed in the advanced stage, and this is due to the lack of a surveillance system
using ultrasound and serum α-fetoprotein for early detection. Moreover, the resources for high

resolution imaging such as computed tomography are absolutely insufficient in number, and the

treatment modalities physicians can choose are largely restricted. Considering that HCC is the
most prevalent malignancy in Mongolia, a systematic approach to prevention, early detection, and

effective treatment is urgently required. Cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p21 protein suppresses
cancer development and possible approach for early diagnosis and screening.

        STUDY AIM

The aim of this study was to determine the role of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p21 for early

diagnosis and treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

        METHODOLOGY

The 100 patients diagnosed with HCC from outpatient department of National Cancer Center

(NCC) of Mongolia in 2018 – 2020 and liver tissue was cut into several small pieces after partial
liver resection and some were snap frozen and kept at -80°C until use in western blot analysis.

The remaining pieces of liver tissue were fixed in 4% PFA in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) at

room temperature (RT) overnight and paraffin-embedded using standard methods. P21 protein
amount was analyzed by immunohistochemistry and western blot. Moreover, correlation between

AFP and p21 amount in blood will be analyzed.

        EXPECTED RESULT

We expect that p21 must be tightly regulate in the liver in order to balance liver regeneration and

cancer risk. It is also possible that p21 as a potential target for chemo preventive and therapeutic

        strategies in the liver.
